Please watch your kids; they’ll tear down ductwork

When people ask me what they can do to lower their energy bills and increase their air quality in their homes I generally tell them one important piece of advice.

Don’t have children. I know, this isn’t what people want to hear when they start probing me for air quality control tips or energy efficient compromises that they can make around the house. However, I can honestly tell you that the central heating, cooling, and ventilation system you are relying on will last ten times as long if you don’t have a handful of rugrats running around the house. First of all, when you have kids they automatically require additional heating and cooling expenses. Because there are more bodies in your house, you will suffer from decreased air quality and increased air temperature fluctuations. This is what happens when there are more hot bodies in the house to produce additional heat for your air conditioning system to compensate for. In the summers, when children are constantly opening and closing doors they will let out your expensive air conditioned air. Furthermore, I can tell you that kids absolutely love to play with thermostats if they are unattended. You should probably lock your temperature control device if you want to maintain a consistent indoor air temperature program. Lastly, know that you should never leave your children in the presence of air ducts work. They see the extensive metal channels and think of playgrounds rather than expensive indoor air passageways. I can’t tell you how many expensive ductwork repair jobs I’ve conducted after the air ducts were ripped out of the attic by children. Want high quality air? Keep kids out of the picture.
